The latest LEGO Ideas results have been announced, with Voltron – Defender of the Universe confirmed for official LEGO set release.
Voltron, designed by Leandro Tayag, was a holdover from the second 2016 review when the project’s fate was left in limbo. The LEGO Group needed additional time to determine whether to go ahead – which can sometimes mean licencing issues being hammered out, but can also be down to determining if the set will work for consumers – and now it has been announced that the project will become an official LEGO release.
Voltron: Defender of the Universe was an animated TV series that ran in the 1980s, adapted from an animated Japanese anime series. The show saw pilots each piloting a lion robot to defend their futuristic world, with the five machines combining to form Voltron. It was hugely successful at the time, frequently topping ratings in the USA for its target demographic.
Voltron – Defender of the Universe uses over 2,000 bricks, and achieved 10,000 supporters in three weeks. It surprised Leandro, as he had intended to just reach 1,000 supporters to allow him to make further improvements. As it happens, the project reached 10,000 supporters while he was driving to LEGOLAND Malaysia.
The official LEGO set based on the project will be released in 2018.
