The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part has dropped to third place after taking $10,015,000 during its third weekend on release.
A new animated film has arrived to have the largest opening weekend of the year so far in the USA, with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World taking $55,527,000 according to Box Office Mojo. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part came in at number three with $10,015,000, bringing the total take so far to $83,619,039. Alita: Battle Angel dropped to second place.
Last weekend the film took $21 million, making the drop-off around 50%.
With an estimated budget of $100 million plus significant marketing costs, The LEGO Movie 2 stands a good chance of breaking even, making it a disappointment for Warner Bros. but not a complete flop. With no fifth LEGO film in production, it is an opportunity for the studio to reassess what to do with the series.
Trisha Gum recently talked about her role as co-director in great detail, discussing the digital parts library that was available to the animators and the tricky task of making mini-dolls movie.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is in cinemas now.
