The LEGO Movie 2 takes second place in second weekend at US box office

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part moved down from first to second place during its second weekend on release.

Taking $21 million at the US box office during its second weekend on release, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part took the number two spot. It opened to a lower-than-predicted $31.1 million the weekend prior, taking a total of $41.5 million during its first week on release.

Alita: Battle Angel exceeded expectations to take the number one spot, with the manga adaptation taking almost $28 million. Producer James Cameron and Director Robert Rodriguez’s film earned positive reviews which may have helped it to beat the competition.

With an estimated budget of $100 million plus significant marketing costs, The LEGO Movie 2 stands a good chance of breaking even, making it a disappointment for Warner Bros. but not a complete flop. With no fifth LEGO film in production, it is an opportunity for the studio to reassess what to do with the series.

Three new sets that will be released this summer were recently revealed – 70842 Emmet’s Triple-Decker Couch Mech, 70837 Shimmer & Shine Sparkle Spa and  70838 Queen Watevra’s ‘So-Not-Evil’ Space Palace.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is in cinemas now.
