Time’s up on submissions for the LEGO Ideas ‘We Love Sports’ contest, which will now move to the judging phase – and potentially result in a new official Ideas set.
As with last year’s ‘Music to our Ears’ contest, the judging panel will whittle the entry pool down to 10 finalists. The fan community will then be able to vote on the eventual winner, while the LEGO Ideas review board will simultaneously consider turning one of the 10 into an official model.
That means the winning submission could be an entirely different entry from the one that eventually makes it to shelves (if any at all are selected by the Ideas team). And that’s exactly what happened in the music-themed contest: RobotRock’s Daft Punk model topped the fan vote, but the LEGO Group gave the nod to seventh-placed TOMOELL’s Legendary Stratocaster.
You can see all the entries in the sports contest by clicking here. The judging panel – which consists solely of LEGO Ideas staff – will narrow them down to 10 based on their overall coolness and originality, the most inspired details, the relevance to the contest theme, and the best use of LEGO elements.
Judging for the separate product review will then follow the usual Ideas guidelines, taking into account the current and future LEGO portfolio, licensing possibilities, build quality, brand fit and more.
Even if the grand prize winner isn’t chosen as a future Ideas set, though, its creator will still take home the entire Ideas 2020 range (including 21321 International Space Station, 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay, 21323 Grand Piano and 21324 123 Sesame Street), 21325 Medieval Blacksmith, a LEGO Ideas tote bag and a custom LEGO trophy.
If you missed out on this LEGO Ideas contest, don’t fret: three more are currently underway, involving video games, brickfilms and NINJAGO respectively.
