The LEGO Group celebrates 20 years of LEGO Star Wars

With this year marking 20 years since the launch of LEGO Star Wars, the LEGO Group is acknowledging the milestone.

In 1999, Star Wars returned with the release of The Phantom Menace – and the first ever LEGO Star Wars sets. With around 700 sets, 1,000 minifigures and 5 video games released since, the LEGO Group is keen to celebrate the significant milestone.

LEGO play and Star Wars is a dream collaboration for us, and we feel privileged to have one of the strongest fan communities out there who continue to inspire and challenge us to push the boundaries. This 20-year milestone is really a dedication and testimony to our loyal fans who have built, reimagined, battled and shared their LEGO Star Wars adventures with us for two decades. Twenty years on, the Force is still with us and there’s still so much more to come,” said Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Creative Director of LEGO Star Wars.

The first LEGO Star Wars sets were unveiled at New York Toy Fair in February 1999, before five classic sets were releases to European consumers in March.
“Our collaboration with the LEGO Group remains a huge success because it allows people to explore the Star Wars galaxy in a very unique way. Whether you’re meticulously building the Millennium Falcon for a display shelf or reimagining the battles with LEGO Star Wars models, the LEGO Star Wars range allows us to engage with fans of all ages who find the Star Wars galaxy as special as we do,” said Derek Stothard, Vice President of Licensing at Lucasfilm.

The LEGO Group has shared some fun facts to mark the occasion:

Five new LEGO Star Wars sets commemorate the 20th anniversary and were released just over one week ago. Each one includes a retro minifigure based on the designs from the theme’s early years:

75262 Imperial Dropship – 20th Anniversary Edition
75258 Anakin’s Podracer – 20th Anniversary Edition (review)
75261 Clone Scout Walker – 20th Anniversary Edition
75259 Snowspeeder – 20th Anniversary Edition (review)
75243 Slave I – 20th Anniversary Edition

Tremors in the Force suggest that there may be special LEGO Star Wars activity in the next few days to celebrate the significant anniversary.
