Space Police – The Early Years

Our resident Space builder takes on the fondly remembered Space Police and gives the theme a fun twist in this sleek vignette

The LEGO Group has released many themes over the years and Classic Space was the benchmark for all subsequent space-based themes. While a lot of brick fanatics and collectors tend to favour Classic Space or Blacktron themes, the Space Police theme did produce a lot of varied sets across three periods released in the late 1980s, early 1990s and then a reboot in 2009.

I love the colour combinations of red, green and black in the second wave during the early 1990s and this build is built around two parts from this period – the Space Police 2×2 printed tile and the green canopy.

This was subtly influenced by Steampunk builds which, for those who don’t know, is a combination of science fiction and the 19th century (think H. G. Wells and Jules Verne). I’ve never braved building one myself, but I liked the idea of introducing a juxtaposition into the build and I chose the Space Police theme combined with British policing in the 1960s.

The build centres around a 16×16 plate which began with a border of 1×2 round bricks. Once in place I used some SNOT parts to fix the brick pavement horizontally which is made using 1×2 masonry bricks – you can never own enough off these.

I’ve used another favourite part of mine to produce the wall detail, the 1×2 Gold Ingot in medium stone grey. This is a wonderful part for providing detail on builds across many themes, I believe it was first introduced in grey in the set Brick Bank (10251) and I sourced a bunch of them for a version of this set which I re-imagined in the Classic Space theme.

I like to think that my build comes from a lost period of LEGO space themes or even an early prototype that didn’t quite make it into full production.

Enjoy!
