During Star Wars Celebration it was announced that the upcoming Season 4 of Star Wars Rebels will be the show’s last. Daniel Konstanski reflects on the show’s cancellation both personally and what it means for LEGO fans.
During the Rebels panel at Star Wars Celebration it was announced that Season 4 would bring the series to a close. In the panel discussion, David Filoni made the statement that his goal was for each generation to have their own piece of Star Wars. My older cousins grew up on the Original Trilogy, I came of age during the prequels, and current teens had The Clone Wars. However, Rebels is special to me because it is my daughters’ piece of Star Wars. What Luke and the Falcon are to many, Ezra, Sabine and the Ghost are for them. Rebels is their piece of Star Wars. They fell in love with this galaxy through that show and it served as their gateway to the larger universe. We are going to miss this show, but it served its purpose. If my daughters continue the Star Wars tradition into their families it will be in no small part because of Rebels.
The beauty of Rebels was how approachable it was for kids while also amusing adults. My girls each claimed Ezra and Sabine respectively early on. The LEGO Group facilitated the obsession with a range of sets over the last three years which have covered many of the main vehicles introduced via the show. We have most of the sets that have come out through the years and I am grateful for that – they remain some of the most played with of our shared sets.
I doubt that the sets from Rebels will have much of an aftermarket value in the years to come. We will certainly not see UCS Falcon level returns on investment. However, if you have kids who loved the show I would recommend that you make an effort to pick up some of the sets before they disappear. Rebels is a nice, manageable, chunk of the Star Wars Universe for kids. Rather than the whole Rebel Alliance right off the bat we got five characters all of whom my kids feel like they know. Then those five characters were transformed into the brick along with the main vehicles. It was magical to watch them re-create and expand upon what they had seen on screen.
Both the show and the LEGO sets had a great run. They are well conceived, if somewhat expensive, sets. Some of the appeal lay in that there never were that many of them so collecting the whole series was feasible even for kids. Our family will be sorry to see both go, but look forward to playing with the LEGO borne of the series for years to come.
