Record breaking LEGO suspension bridge on display

Another day, another LEGO record, as a brick built suspension bridge goes on display at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London. Duncan Titmarsh and the Bright Bricks team put the impressive model together with design advice from the expert bridge engineer Robin Sham.

The LEGO bridge is on display as part of a Bridge Engineering exhibition until April next year. A variety of hands-on activities are designed to get visitors to try making their own bridges and think about engineering.

The bridge has a length of 31 metres, and is over three metres high. It took 200,000 LEGO bricks for the team to put the build together at Weydon School in Farnham, Surrey. Prep work was done at the Bright Bricks studio, with work there and at the school totalling 650 hours. The record has been verified by Guinness World Records.

Ramboll explains how the bridge is a record-breaker:

ICE broke the world record for the longest single bridge span created out of LEGO bricks, unaided by glue or structural supports. The previous record was a single span of 14 metres – ICE achieved a new record with a single span of 16.46 metres. The two connected side spans either end of the main give the bridge a total span of 31 metres.
