With The LEGO Batman Movie released in a week, news has dropped of The LEGO Movie Sequel undergoing a change in director. Rob Schrab, who was set to direct the sequel to 2014’s The LEGO Movie, has been replaced by Mike Mitchell.
The Hollywood Reporter shared the news:
Rob Schrab was previously named director, but sources say a parting of ways occurred due to “creative differences.”
Original Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who recently started production on the Han Solo Star Wars movie, wrote the first draft of the script, which was then re-written by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of Netflix’s animated comedy BoJack Horseman.
Mitchell looks to have the right kind of background for directing an animated movie, having held the seat for Shrek Forever After and Alvin and the Chipunks: Chipwrecked – but part of the success of The LEGO Movie was due to it not following the typical franchise formula. Most ironically, Mitchell recently directed Trolls, which was largely perceived as a reaction to the success of The LEGO Movie.
The LEGO Movie Sequel is due for release on February 8, 2019.
