Marvel’s What If…? starts today on Disney+

Marvel’s What If…? debuts on Disney+ today, with the first episode focusing on the source material behind one of this summer’s LEGO Marvel sets.

The LEGO Group has so far launched two tie-in sets for the alternate-reality animated series, including 76194 Tony Stark’s Sakaarian Iron Man and 76201 Captain Carter & The Hydra Stomper. The latter of those will apparently form the basis for the show’s first episode (at least going by the character posters), which asks: what if Peggy Carter became Captain America instead of Steve Rogers?

A future episode will also ask ‘What if Tony Stark landed on Sakaar instead of Thor?’, providing the inspiration for the other Hulkbuster-style mech that arrived on August 1. For more LEGO Marvel What If…?, look to 71031 Marvel Studios, the next Collectible Minifigures series that launches in September (in most regions, anyway).

Five of those 12 characters are inspired by What If…?, including Zombie Hunter Spidey, Zombie Captain America, Gamora with the Blade of Thanos, T’Challa Star-Lord and another (more detailed) version of Captain Carter. The rest are all based on the first three Marvel Cinematic Universe shows: WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki.

What If…? will air weekly exclusively on Disney+. 76194 Tony Stark’s Sakaarian Iron Man and 76201 Captain Carter & The Hydra Stomper are available now.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then. You can follow me on Twitter at @brfa_chris.
