As part of the company’s drive to use only sustainable materials in its packaging, the LEGO Group has announced that plastic bags will be replaced with paper bags in branded stores.
Next year, the LEGO Group will replace “all plastic bags” with paper bags across the company’s 500+ branded stores. The paper bags will be introduced when the stocks of plastic bags run out, and are made from 100% Forest Stewardship Council certified paper and are fully recyclable.
By 2025, the LEGO Group is committed to using only sustainable materials in its packaging, with the following specific pledges:
Renewable: 100% of LEGO boxes, bags, and special packaging are to be made from recycled or sustainably sourced renewable or recycled materials
Efficient: ongoingly exploring ways to optimise packaging, balancing consumer appeal with environmental action
Recyclable: designing packaging that can be recycled by consumers
Steps have already been taken, with plastic blister bubbles now made from recycled plastic, US packaging now explaining how to recycle the packaging and advent calendar plastic trays replaced with recyclable paper-pulp trays. While many fans will be pleased to see the LEGO Group taking the company’s environmental commitments seriously, there will be concerns about how they will get massive D2C sets like LEGO Batman 76139 1989 Batmobile home without the help of a sturdy bag or two.
