LEGO Lord of the Rings Minas Tirith project hits 10K on LEGO Ideas

A LEGO Ideas project based on The Lord of the Rings’ Minas Tirith has reached 10,000 votes, and could theoretically trigger the return of the Middle-earth theme.

Dutch designer GJC15344’s model isn’t the first based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic saga to reach the review stage this year, but it does take a slightly different path to the Map of Middle-earth and The Shire, depicting the scene of its climactic battle rather than the place the story begins.

Aping the aesthetic of 2012’s 9474 The Battle of Helm’s Deep, GJC15344’s rendition of Minas Tirith leans heavily into realistic light grey stonework, depicting three levels of walls that ingeniously combine microscale and minifigure-scale to reflect the grand nature of the on-screen fortress.

Accompanying the castle are 11 minifigures – including Gandalf the White, Pippin, Lord Denethor and Faramir – and an orc catapult and siege tower. Paired with its walkable ramparts and working gates, there’s plenty of potential for play here.

We’ve already speculated that Amazon’s new TV series based on the franchise could see LEGO The Lord of the Rings return in 2022, and GJC15344 has latched on to the same sentiment in the pitch for their model, writing: “Let’s show [the LEGO Group] that we are dying to see the Lord of the Rings theme return!”

Whether Minas Tirith will bring about that return is now in the hands of the LEGO Ideas team. The project joins 28 others in the second 2021 review, which will remain open for new additions until early next month. Here’s the full line-up so far:

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then. You can follow me on Twitter at @brfa_chris.
