LEGO launches first LGBTQIA+ set in 40516 Everyone is Awesome

The LEGO Group has revealed a brand new rainbow-coloured set – complete with 11 monochrome minifigures – to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and the diversity of its fans.

Taking its cues from the rainbow flag used as a symbol of love and acceptance by the LGBTQIA+ community, 40516 Everyone is Awesome builds into a display model championing inclusivity across its 11 monochrome minifigures.

And as you might have already guessed, this is exactly the model that Vice President of Design Matthew Ashton has been teasing through his Twitter account for the past week, one brick at a time.

“I wanted to create a model that symbolises inclusivity and celebrates everyone, no matter how they identify or who they love,” Matthew said.

“Everyone is unique, and with a little more love, acceptance and understanding in the world, we can all feel more free to be our true, awesome selves! This model shows that we care, and that we truly believe ‘Everyone is awesome’!”

40516 Everyone is Awesome is also a very personal tribute to Matthew’s experiences working at the LEGO Group, and is subsequently intended as a celebration of not only the LGBTQIA+ community among the brand’s fans, but its employees, too.

“I am fortunate to be a part of a proud, supportive and passionate community of colleagues and fans,” the designer continued. “We share love for creativity and self-expression through LEGO bricks and this set is a way to show my gratitude for all the love and inspiration that is constantly shared.”
