LEGO Ideas wants you to ring in the new year with bricks

If you’re feeling down about not being able to celebrate the new year properly, LEGO Ideas is giving you the opportunity to ring in 2021 using LEGO bricks.

That’s the premise behind the crowdfunding platform’s latest Activity. If you’re not familiar with LEGO Ideas Activities, they’re generally small, quick challenges that invite builders to get creative and design something around a specific theme.

In this case, the Ideas team wants to know how you’re planning on celebrating the new year. You can tell them by building your plans in bricks – whether it’s a fireworks display, countdown, or perhaps some very socially-distant minifigures toasting tiny glasses of champagne. There’s no doubt that real-life celebrations will be muted this year, so you might as well live vicariously through miniature plastic people.

As always, LEGO Ideas advises builders to stick to generic LEGO elements. Using bricks specific to licensed sets may prevent the platform from being able to share submissions on its social pages. It also recommends keeping the background of your photos as clean as possible.

If you want to get involved, you can share your creation on the dedicated Activity page. You’ve got until 9am GMT on December 23 to do so.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then. You can follow me on Twitter at @brfa_chris.
