‘Everything is awesome’ became the unofficial children’s catchphrase in 2014, after the main track from The LEGO Movie managed to get it stuck in the head of anyone who saw it. What made the film such a success though was its appeal to adults too, who enjoyed the dose of nostalgia it gave them for creative LEGO play.
 
In 2019, following The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO NINJAGO Movie, came the release of The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. Finn –and his sister, Bianca – are introduced five years older than were the last time audiences met them. Rather than just following one child’s world, the sequel sees the LEGO adventure through both of their eyes.
 
For Finn, that is the grim, empty world of Apocalypseburg, while for Bianca, it is the sweet sparkly universe of the Systar System. Beloved characters voiced by big movie stars including Emmet (Chris Pratt), Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and Batman (Will Arnett) return, with new characters including Queen Wat’evra Wanabi (Tiffany Haddish) and Sweet Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz) introduced.
 
As with the previous movies, the sets based on the film offered some of the largest, most detailed models outside of Creator Expert and Technic. Wherever possible, the LEGO designers had the physical sets match what was seen on screen, having worked on the film while they were developing the models.
 
Given that they are mixed together on screen, the sets saw minifigures and mini-dolls appear in sets together for the first time. The range offered a very broad range of sets thanks to the varied worlds in the film, from the ramshackle 70829 Emmet and Lucy's Escape Buggy! to the sleek 70830 Sweet Mayhem's Systar Starship!.
 
70840 Welcome to Apocalypseburg! serves as the centrepiece set for the collection, providing an incredible display piece and playset that provides a big old hint as to one of the movies the inspiration for this apocalyptic land came from. 
 
The LEGO Movie 2 opened to mixed reviews and did not achieve the box office that Warner Bros. had hoped for, leading to what looks to be a change of direction for the movie franchise. It did provide a series of high-quality LEGO sets though, that it is unlikely the designers would have dreamt up without the film to anchor them.
