With Star Wars opening up licensed properties to the LEGO Group and Winnie the Pooh bringing his honey to DUPLO, it was time for the LEGO Group to light up the Bat-signal and call upon a super hero for the first time. Between 2006 and 2008, the LEGO Group released 14 LEGO Batman sets. Initially the sets were not as successful as the company had hoped for, but demand increased when LEGO Batman: The Videogame was released in 2008 – but the new sets were only available in a limited way that year.
 
By the time that 2012 arrived, the LEGO Batman sets had increased to ridiculous prices on the secondary market, with sellers on Amazon charging five time the original retail price or more. Alongside LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, LEGO DC Super Heroes arrived to rescue fans from overpriced retired Batman sets.
 
Rather than simply focusing on the Dark Knight, the theme would also cover the rest of the DC crew, including Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern. The first year of sets would not give that away though, with only 6862 Superman vs. Power Armor Lex and 4528 Green Lantern not based on Batman. 4526 Batman and 4527 The Joker also provided some constraction action for the new range, with the rest of it focused on traditional System sets.
 
The following year really saw the theme adapt content from the new DC films, with specific sets such as 76003 Superman: Battle of Smallville specifically based on that year’s new movie, Man of Steel. 
 
Over the years, there have been a few large, appealing LEGO DC Super Heroes sets aimed at adults, including 10937 Batman: Arkham Asylum Breakout, 76023 The Tumbler, 76052 Batman Classic TV Series – Batcave and 76139 1989 Batmobile. Some are large, detailed playsets, others are large vehicle sets for display, but they all offer greater authenticity then the smaller models.
