School aged girls in Texas, USA will be competing this weekend to get a taste of a career in construction.
The Block Kids Building Competition is taking place in Austin, Texas, USA this weekend. It has been organised by the Girl Scouts of Central Texas and the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and will see 50 elementary school age girls compete. They will each have one hour and 100 LEGO bricks to see what they can build.
Although this competition is full, NAWIC will host more competitions to give girls a taste of what a career in construction can entail. “It’s just a really good precursor to get kids interested Jana McCann, a NAWIC member, told kxan.
Construction companies in the US are struggling to find qualified employees, according to data from the Associated General Contractors of America. Worker shortages are a big concern for employers, with NAWIC believing that encouraging more women into construction careers will help in the long term.
“It’s something that with the right training and determination and desire … anybody can be an architect or an engineer or a foreman,” McCann said.
