Classic LEGO Space P.L.A.Z.A.

This build will delight Classic Space fans, as Justin continues his journey of expanding the limits of what can be done in this unique style.

The Public Leisure Approved Zoned Area (P.L.A.Z.A.) exists in a world where our Classic Space friends need time out to relax between critical missions in an environment made to resemble and fondly remind them of the planet they left behind. The various crew members enjoy the simple things such as cycling, eating ice creams and photography. Benny can often be found busking to entertain his colleagues with an array of Beatles and Bob Dylan covers.

Most of my builds tend to lean towards Classic Space and my love of Benny which stems from the fact that these were the first sets that I owned and loved. This build was an opportunity to use some lovely trans-blue pieces I’d acquired including the wonder corner-convex piece which is a personal favourite. I’d used some floral pieces on another build so I decided to go all out and use what else I could find from my daughter’s LEGO Friends sets.

The back panels use a simple technique whereby I created cavities to slot the detail into which uses two principles of LEGO geometry – 5 plates on end equals a brick two studs wide and the 5:6 ratio which tells us that five 1×1 bricks stacked on top of each other are the same length as a standard 1×6 brick.

My favourite part of the build must be the grey Classic Space minifigure which I acquired from various sources. The grey minifigure was relatively easy to find and the grey airtank was included in a number of Classic Space sets on the front of vehicles etc. The hardest piece to source was the grey helmet which I discovered was included in early Castle sets before being replaced with different style helmets.
