The latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe arrives on cinema screens today, with the release of Captain Marvel coinciding with International Women’s Day.
While it seems unlikely that the corporate entity that is Disney fully embraces the importance of International Women’s Day, the opportunity for marketing synergy could not be resisted – so Captain Marvel, the first film in the Marvel super hero film franchise to feature a female lead, is released today.
Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers in the 1990s set film, with Samuel L Jackson back as Nicky Fury, using computer generated techniques to de-age the actor. Gemma Chan, Jude Law and Ben Mendelson add even more star power to the cast.
One LEGO set has been released based on the film, 76127 Captain Marvel and the Skrull Attack (review), which includes the key characters as well as building an early version of the Quinjet. Perhaps the film will reveal how SHIELD came to acquire the craft in the first place.
This is the beginning of a packed year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Captain Marvel set to be followed by both Avengers Endgame and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Captain Marvel is in cinemas now.
