Book deal signed for the LEGO lost at sea story

Adrift: The Curious Tale of the Lego Lost at Sea will tell the story of LEGO elements washing up on the coast of Cornwall, UK.

Tracey Williams, the beach comber who has been chronicling LEGO parts washing up on the Cornish coast, has signed a book deal for Adrift: The Curious Tale of the Lego Lost at Sea. Unicorn will release the book in May 2021.

Here is the synopsis:

In 1997 62 containers fell off the cargo ship ‘Tokio Express’ after it was hit by a rogue wave off the coast of Cornwall, including one container filled with nearly five million pieces of LEGO, much of it sea themed. In the months that followed, beachcombers started to find Lego washed up on beaches across the southwest coast. Among the pieces they discovered were octopuses, sea grass, spear guns, life rafts, scuba tanks, cutlasses, flippers and dragons. The pieces are still washing up today.

“We are delighted to be publishing the story of the Lego spillage off the Cornish coast in 1997. Research by Tracey and other members of the beachcombing and beach cleaning community has uncovered a wealth of new information about the contents of the containers,” says Unicorn Editorial Director Lucy Duckworth. “This book is more than simply about beachcombing; it’s a morality tale for our time. ”

“I’m really pleased to be signed to Unicorn who are the perfect partners for this project. I’m looking forward to working with Lucy and her team and taking them dragon hunting on the shores of Cornwall,” says Williams.
