AFOL disappointment at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Melbourne

A new location opens up a LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, adult fans get refused entry. It seems to come around every year or so, and this time it is the Melbourne, Australia location that has made the news.

Adult fans who were refused entry to the newly opened attraction left negative reviews on Facebook due to their disappointment, with one stating that they would lodge a discrimination complaint with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.

LEGOLAND Discovery Centres are designed for children ages between 3 – 10 years old, described as ‘the ultimate indoor play area’. Operated by Merlin, the company behind the regular LEGOLAND theme parks, these are specifically targeted at children. The child protection policy the centres have in place is to not allow entry to lone adults – which while a broad, sweeping policy, is simple enough to enforce.

The solution that has been offered at various venues including the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Melbourne (and Manchester in the UK) is to have a monthly AFOL evening is held, allowing fans without children to check out the venue and get involved with some hands-on building. Hopefully something similar can be offered at additional international locations to give more fans a chance to check out the attractions.
