A Christmas LEGO build: Skating in the snow

Talented builder Justin Winn continues his annual tradition of sharing a charming LEGO Christmas scene

Like many others, I try to make time to do a Christmas-themed LEGO build which will stay on display until we decide it’s time to take down the tree and decorations. This year I was asked to do a build for the Christmas Fayre at my youngest son’s school – the idea being that people pay to guess how many parts are in the build and the winner walked away with the LEGO City 60195 Arctic Mobile Exploration Base set which had been kindly donated.

I decided to go for a typical winter scene with children playing on a frozen lake with a tree and presents in the background. It wouldn’t be a festive build without Mr and Mrs Christmas preparing for the busiest day of their year and the addition of Rudolph – and a modest shelter for him to sleep in – completed the build.

Given the audience would be mainly primary school children I couldn’t resist including Olaf from Disney’s Frozen for the final flourish.

A fairly straightforward build, the trickiest parts being the tree and the roof of building. The hardest and most unnatural part of the build experience was trying to keep count of the number of parts used which is not something I’ve ever had to do before and I’d often find myself getting immersed in the build and then remembering that I need to keep count.

Enjoy and have a wonderful Christmas!

Oh, and the answer is 966 parts.

I'm long-time LEGO fan who fully emerged from my ‘dark age’ in 2014, after three children and a lot of LEGO building reignited my interest. My first love is Classic Space – they're the first sets I owned – and this passion is reflected in my creations as a recurring theme.
