Following the success of The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie, the third film in the series was released in the USA on September 17, 2017 and in the UK on October 13, 2017. The LEGO NINJAGO Movie took the characters and concepts from LEGO NINJAGO and gave the big-screen treatment.
The film sees high school students Lloyd, Zane, Jay, Cole, Kai and Nya turn into the Secret Ninja Force when they need to protect NINJAGO City from Lord Garmadon. It focuses on the relationship between Garmadon and Lloyd – who is the evil overlord’s son. Star power is brought to the animated adventure by Jackie Chan, who voices Master Wu, James Franco as Lloyd and Justin Theroux as Garmadon.
A huge range of sets debuted ahead of The LEGO NINJAGO Movie, bigger and more detailed than the standard LEGO NINJAGO sets. Each one of the main characters has their own mech, inspired by their elemental power – Jay has 70614 Lightning Jet, Kai has 70615 Fire Mech, Zane has 70616 Ice Tank, Cole has 70632 Quake Mech, Nya has 70611 Water Strider and Lloyd has 70612 Green Ninja Mech Dragon.
The home base for the entire gang, 70618 Destiny's Bounty, received its most detailed ever iteration the theme. While it has appeared several times in the LEGO NINJAGO theme, this is the biggest and most impressive version yet. The scale that it is in with the minifigures makes it feel like a Creator Expert set.
Of all The LEGO NINJAGO Movie sets though, 70620 NINJAGO City is the best of the bunch. Offering the most detailed modular building ever released by the LEGO Group using 4,867 pieces, it seems more for adults than children. Every little aspect of the set is packed detail and thanks to the carefully constructed chaos, it looks fantastic on display.
While the quality of the sets in The LEGO NINJAGO Movie theme is not up for dispute, the film itself fared poorly both critically and at the box office. The storyline was convoluted and the comedy found in the previous films was lacking, while a release date just six months after The LEGO Batman Movie did not help matters. Whatever the merits of the film though, it did inspire some very fine LEGO sets for fans to collect.
