Motorsports have always been covered by the LEGO Group, with occasional sets turning up in City, Town, Creator and Technic. While Creator and Technic have offered detailed sets, City and Town have focused on playability – and very rarely have any of the sets been licensed or in scale to one another.   In 2015, LEGO Speed Champions arrived to bring a motor racing theme to fans of the sport. For the first time, there would be a series of affordable, collectible cars at similar sizes that were developed in conjunction with Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren and just about every other sports car manufacturer.   Every single car was based on a six studs-wide template, with space for a minifigure to be popped into the driver’s seat. In each set, the model captures the real-life car’s unique shape while using stickers to feature authentic decals. Small accessories are included with they sets, such as traffic lights, ramps and trophies.   To add a little scenery to the theme and give the cars something to interact with, sets such as 75911 McLaren Mercedes Pit Stop and 75912 Porsche 911 GT Finish Line build up key aspects of a racing circuit.   While the theme proved popular with children who wanted hand-held cars to race and adults who enjoyed collecting them all, a niggling frustration was the scale of the sportscars. They were a bit too wide compared to the length and felt oddly proportioned with the minifigure.   After doing plenty of research into consumer opinions, the LEGO Speed Champions changed things up for 2020 with a new scale. From now on, the cars would be eight studs wide. This allowed the theme to tackle different shapes, such as the GEN2 found in 76898 Formula E Panasonic Jaguar Racing GEN2 Car & Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY.   With eight stud wide cars providing the opportunity for improved authenticity, motorsports fans can collect the most detailed versions of their favourite cars that the LEGO Group has ever offered at this hand-held size.
