LEGO Harry Potter launched in 2001 at the height of Potter-mania. Four years after the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the book was to be released as a film – so LEGO sets were arriving alongside it.
Given that so much of the action takes place within Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, the first year of sets were predominantly rooms within the castle, which could be connected and combined to build out a full version of the location. All of the key characters were included, with Harry’s face print featuring his distinctive scar and glasses.
With each annual film release came a new wave of tie-in LEGO Harry Potter sets, with a particular highlight being 10132 Motorised Hogwarts Express in 2004. It offered a
working version of 4758 Hogwarts Express along with Hogsmeade Station that could be combined with the train track system.
In 2007, 5378 Hogwarts Castle was the only set released for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, with no further sets released until 2010. For two years, fans got sets based on the entire story, with the exceptional 10217 Diagon Alley providing one of the theme’s finest entries.
It seemed that LEGO Harry Potter theme was over, with fans lacking any magic in their LEGO sets. But in 2018, the range returned with a bang to tie in with the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. With modern elements and building techniques, Harry Potter looked better in the brick than ever before, revisiting the early films for inspiration as well as the new ones.
The new sets offered some of the finest minifigures ever released, with great detailing and expressive faces capturing the characters in all of their glory. A new leg element offers shorter legs that are also posable so that key characters could still be dynamic. With a special wave of Collectible Minifigures, collectors had plenty of opportunity to populate their world.
One of the largest LEGO sets every released is part of this revitalised theme, with 71043 Hogwarts Castle using 6,020 pieces to recreate the enormous location in microscale, capturing the most distinctive part of the school in an impressive model. Four exclusive minifigures offer the founders of Hogwarts for the first time in the set.?
