Following on from my review of the Deep Seas starter set, additions to this theme are being added as part of my City expansion.
It should be noted that I have not built the majority of the sets yet – most of them have been deboxed and storage bagged, so I reckon that when I get around to it, there will be at least 100+ sets that could be built at any one time!
But as I get most of my parcels delivered to work (much to the chargin of my colleagues), the smaller sets tend to get opened and built there and then. Set 60090 is an example of this – what I call pocket money LEGO. Polybags are all well and good, but difficult to come by and mainly via promotions, so these small sets are the filler.
Official Description:
Dive for lost treasure with the Deep Sea Scuba Scooter!
Join the scuba diver on a deep-sea exploration for lost treasure with the Deep Sea Scuba Scooter! Steer the awesome scuba scooter through the clear water and down to the depths. Then use the robotic arms to grab the precious crystal, but watch out for the giant octopus lurking in the seaweed! It also has a crystal gripped tightly in one of its long tentacles! Can you retrieve the precious crystal? Includes a scuba diver minifigure.
The review
For the AFOL, this is a ridiculously easy set to build. I managed to get it built by sight in about 4 mins. You don’t have to look at the maps unless you really have to and I am sure that the young builder may well need a little bit of help.
There is something very 007 about this for some reason – it just reminds me of Thunderball. Which is kind of cool as I am sure that one could very easily re-create the scene from that film.
Parts wise there is nothing new or outstanding within, I am pleased to see the return of the grey ‘booster’ elements, which I thought may have been lost with the end of LEGOLAND Town, but it was good to see these old friends again. The minifigure is the same as the starter set with apparatus and diving mask.
The harpoon guns are very nicely done. Years ago, LEGO would have not even approached this kind of element, but times have changed and they add value.
The octopus is a funny one piece element using clear yellow 1×1 round plates for eyes. I do wonder if this would freak little people out. But it adds a small realm of peril which is what the deep sea does bring.
I don’t have too much else to say about the set. It does its job, but I do think that the price point should be reduced. Five quid is a little bit too much for this, I think – around £3.50 would be far better value. Will keep a little person entertained, but unless you are a hardcore City person, then AFOL’s might avoid and invest elsewhere.
